winter

Scandinavian inspiration continues. Scandinavian type inspiring Japanese design at CINQ. Discovered earlier this year via simply photo.

More Scandinavian and Japanese finds;

Discovered in Helsinki, Finnish artist Maarit Kontiainen.

LINNET Japanese textile emporium in Kyoto and on-line.

HauHauz Finnish fabric design from Turku, also on-line.

All of these finds evoke a sense of hygge the sadly no-more Islington shop. Greatly missed.

green roof

Ever since going to the Norsk Folkemuseum across the water from Oslo, I have loved living green roof tops. Here's a Sedum bird box from Hen & Hammock.

You Grow Girl's Succulent Window Box project is inspiring. Many details about succulent varieties.

Looking forward to time in the garden. Here's a fun seed chart from goldtop, a sweet way to keep a record of growth.

good food

For the love of lunch in Spring. Today I read about flavour, new to Soho. I need to go there and sample the menu. This made me think about my appreciation for good food in London.

A lunch favourite is Eat., especially for the new Spring menu. Stars so far in my tasting experience are two new soups; Cuban Black Bean and Sweet Potato Mascarpone Chilli, wonderfully different. That's not mentioning the pies! I discovered from a ricepaper label under a pie that pie minister supply Eat. with their delicious pies. I originally discovered pie minister at Borough Market.

Recently discovered Leon has a tasty seasonal menu, yet to get there for lunch. Mildreds is an old favourite for dinner after work, the best sweet potato chunky chips.

Enough of my extravagances, and back to sandwich making for me.

A further foodie find is Les Recettes d'Orangette, a great resource from the wonderful Orangette.

bounty

A bountiful parcel with body + soul magazine from Jen, many thanks.

Traded for June's Elle Decoration, cover featuring a piece by Karin Eriksson.

Lovely, dark & deep opens at doe today, wish I could get to San Francisco. Yesterdays's 3191 post is wonderful, the travelling deer and mav's bread and jam reminds me of simply breakfast's new header.

Mav's new photo & print project features this beauty. Pure indulgence; dark, decadent and delicious!

More beauty in the work of Gentl & Hyers, photographers for the cover of body + soul this month. Their on-line portfolio is superb. Spot another piece by Karin Eriksson!

Steamed Artichokes in honour of Spring. Enjoy the weekend.

rule below

Captured at my friends allotment on Good Friday or 'Great Friday' as it was refered to by one of the children.

Here is the first of my weekly posts, a better way; making more of these light evenings and appreciating the sunsets. Most, not all of the blossom has blown away now and I am amazed how leaves have grown since last week.

I am drawing a metaphorical line under random regular posting and looking to begin more thoughtful mid week posts, a small routine in a chaotic life.

Today I bought the book, hinted about last Tuesday. The Happy Campers is a fantastic book, which brightened a double decker bus ride home. Happiness on the printed page. Images from the website and all the illustration is by co-author Kat Heyes, also Kat's blog.

More inspiration discovered from illustrator Hennie Haworth. I love the techniques combined to make such striking images, here are a selection of pieces.

I discovered Hennie Haworth illustrated an article for the Guardian G2, in November 2006. The on-line article makes an amusing read about organic vegetable boxes and includes a couple of recipes.

warbling

Louise Body Wallprint, here a wallpaper design and two of her luxurious cushions. I spotted this wallpaper adorning the counter at Oliver Bonas.

My lovely bloom print arrived in the post today, an exciting envelope to return home to. Reading more I have discovered this wonderful post by onegirl.

floral outline

Notebooks, badges and a postcard from Jill Bliss. There is a lot more to see at Jill Bliss' website, including a blog and a link to her blissen shop. A beautifully whimsical style and full of floral inspiration.

Equally inspired by port2port's new photo & print project.

Herbs spring to mind from the botanical illustration and the photograph of the cold frame - Potato-parsley Scones. Once a favourite of mine when I could buy Parsley Scones from the Salisbury W.I. market. I need to compare this recipe to my memory of them.

green start

March, fresh lively greens from the earthiness of winter. New beginnings.

I was carried away today by reading 'onegirl = canadian hands designing and creating in melbourne, thrift shopping, glossy magazines, roasted almonds, green tea, muted colours (grey blue, pale pistachio green, dusty pink, soft dove grey, the creamiest cream, pale turquoise, rusty orange), crisp linen, wool felt, organic pottery, tiny seashells, bonsai, woodcut prints, chamomile, the patterns of wood, scandinavian design, japanese craft books, line drawings, dark chocolate, hand dying fabric...'

How perfect and lovely that colour hints can take you on a visual journey. I have bought the print bloom from onegirl. Beautiful colours combined.

Green is for spring, fresh green recipes for a new season from delicious:days, redesigned and reorganised.

green asparagus tart with potatoes
Recipe source: Genießen mit Gästen, Alastair Hendy, p.45, adapted
Prep time: 20min., baking: 25-30min.

serves 3-4:
a bunch of green asparagus (about 12 pieces)
2 large potatoes, sliced
3-4 tbsp olive oil
puff pastry, cut into shape
75g Gruyere, grated
2 eggs, lightly beaten
100ml Crème double
a pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
sea salt & freshly ground pepper

Cut off the asparagus’ tougher stalk ends (about 1-2 inches/3-5 cm). Blanch the asparagus briefly for 1 to 2 minutes in boiling, lightly salted water, then transfer to a bowl with ice water (to preserve its fresh green color and overall quality).

Peel and thinly slice potatoes (3-4 mm) and add to a pot with a few spoons of olive oil. Carefully pan-fry potatoes over low to medium heat for about 5-8 minutes (don’t let them brown). Then remove the slices from the pot.

Grease a suitable rectangular tart (8 inch/20 cm) form with butter, arrange puff pastry and form a small rim. Using a fork, stab little holes all over the arranged puff pastry. On top, add a layer of potato slices and sprinkle with grated Gruyère.

Combine eggs and Crème double in a bowl, season with sea salt, freshly ground pepper and nutmeg and pour over the potatoes/Gruyère. Now arrange asparagus spears equally across the tart. You may want to brush the tart edges with melted butter or egg yolk to let it gain a nice golden color while baking.

Bake at 180°C (360°F) in the preheated oven for about 25 to 30 minutes.

expectation

Soon by notraces, holds such texture and beauty in the suggestion of spring.

Winter Flowers from You Grow Girl is about bringing spring inside.

A Book Cover project from Moonstitches, which I would like to make to transport my paperback read. Cherry blossom branches are beautifully captured by Moonstitches.

And a warming dish from simply photo yesterday, acorn love squash recipe, lovely images.

roasted acorn squash from the kitchen diaries via simply photo

set oven to 350 degrees.
cut acorn squash in half and scoop out pulp and seeds.
lay squash cut side up on baking sheet {i put it on top of aluminum foil too}. put a small slice of butter in the center of each squash, together with a little olive oil, a couple of thyme leaves, salt, and plenty of ground pepper. roast for an hour. check occasionally, you want them to be tender when you pierce it with a knife. if you like them sweet, you can add a little maple syrup and cinnamon.

cheer

I discovered these today after spotting a cushion design in a photographer's portfolio. I found the very pretty website for Clare Nicolson and her lovely work. Very cheering for a wet Monday in the city, a blank sky today and lashings of rain.

This sounds colourful, Beetroot Pasta Salad with Orange dressing from Abel & Cole. I once made tomato & beetroot pasta for tea, cooked-up the whole dish made an amazing magenta colour.

anticipation

I am looking forward to the Spring blooming and leaves bursting so much. I saw the first tiny unfurling bright green leaves of this year early today, a couple of daffodils and clumps of crocuses, upright with spear-like coloured buds. Glad, so glad it is the weekend - time and day light to replant my window boxes and be outside.

line & stitch

The latest edition of Source magazine features the illustrator Kate Miller in an article about preparing for university. I have admired Miller's work since discovering it in Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine. I have chosen 'Summer Postcard' to feature, wonderful bright colours and all that's great about the English seaside.

This Miller illustration reminds me of Rachael Howard's work in print and stitch. The second image is Howard's 'Sunning It', a fabric picture from the Sunbathers series. Both these artist's capture summer time in their unique sketched observation of people and details.

Seaside Guacamole because it's also summery. Today is a sunny day, so must make the most of it.

fine feathers

I have just discovered this striking letterpress wall print from Rare Device. I saw a crow perched high up in the tree outside my window at work yesterday, it was very windy, the tree lurching around and the bird clinging on. I get stressed about deadlines and this small glimpse of perseverance outside inspired me.

Today I am pleased to have purchased this delicate gocco print from Sugarloop in New Zealand. Looking forward to finding just the right frame for this piece.

Another find; a gorgeous web site of perfect cushions and more Leonor Mataillet. One day I will decide which cushions to place in my arm chairs when they are finally recovered, which material is another decision.

Sweet Carrot Salad, something healthy for the weekend.

leaves

More designs inspired by nature, with an interesting comparison between this Stig Lindberg dish. I love Lindberg's pottery.

As compared to this leather punched purse by Orla Kiely

I found both of these images whilst wandering on the web. The leaf motifs are so similar, both wonderful objects.
